We had a nice big group out at Sunbelt yesterday renewing their AWP & Forklift certifications. Even though this is a requirement from the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) it doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! We all learned a lot because of our great instructors! Our practical training was full of hands-on activities that really helped us apply and demonstrate our knowledge. We pride ourselves on safety and the best way to maintain a safe workplace is continued training. Our employees are happy to continue learning as well, which makes for a wonderful, supportive environment in these classes.

During these courses we learn about new technology, safety requirements, touch base on basic operations, safe maintenance, and, of course some basic fundamentals. Certifications need to be renewed every few years to keep up with OSHA guidelines set forth by the American National Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks. There are many guidelines to adhere to, but all are necessary to maintain a safe work environment and prevent accidents, which is an overall goal all businesses should strive for. OSHA requires that employers develop and implement these kinds of training programs for the vehicles that fit into their description of a powered industrial truck. However, the definition of a powered industrial truck according to OSHA doesn’t include earth movers or road haulage trucks, just other vehicles that push, pull, carry, stack, lift or tier materials, which really covers a broad spectrum of vehicles.

Before any of our employees even have a chance to operate these kinds of vehicles we have to evaluate their competency by written and by practical testing. And if, at any point, we feel that they are not up to par with their competency we can have them retrain, even if it’s before the training re-certification that happens every few years. This is to ensure their safety on the equipment as well as their coworker’s safety. Again, we pride ourselves on a safe workplace and we will continue to maintain high standards for safety for all of our employees.
